For its part, ELA has once again rejected the ERTE on the grounds that the company uses this mechanism in a “structural” way to “save costs at the expense of the public treasury.”

Arcelor Mittal and the UGT, CCOO and USO unions have agreed this Friday night in Etxebarri to apply a Temporary Employment Regulation File (ERTE) until December 31, 2022 which will guarantee 90% of the annual gross salary.
This agreement, reported by UGT FICA in a press release, establishes that the ERTE be applied to the workforce for each plant based on the drop in production: for Asturias 25% of maximum application; Sagunto (40%); Etxebarri (twenty%); Lesaka (60%), and in Long (Olaberria-Bergara) 20%.
This file will not be applied in any installation that has 100% production capacity, while for the personnel of transversal services, the application will be a maximum of the percentage of the plant to which they belong.
Regarding the conditions, the company and the unions have agreed that the salary percentage be 90% of the annual gross salary and 100% for extra payments and vacations. The agreement also includes training, according to the provisions of the Workers’ Statute, and a follow-up commission for both local and state levels.
Given the current scenario of uncertainty, Arcelor Mittal first proposed to the unions an ERTE for its plants in Spain, except Condesa, valid until December 2023 and that would affect its 8,300 workers.
ALS Response
For her part, ELA has rejected again the ERTE for considering that the company uses this mechanism in a “structural” way to “save costs at the expense of the public treasury”.
In a statement, ELA has recalled that Arcelor Mittal applies since 2009 “practically uninterrupted” an ERTE, despite the fact that last year the multinational had a global benefit of more than 13 billion.
The abertzale union has demanded that the company carry out investments and industrial plans that guarantee the future of the Basque factories, in addition to addressing a rejuvenation of the workforce, applying the “correct” relief contract and tackle the “I spread the wealth”.
Likewise, he has urged the Basque and Navarrese governments to have a “much more active position against a company that accumulates profits while having fewer staff each year”.
