Human Rights Watch says Taliban’s brutal education policies harm both boys and girls

The Taliban’s “abusive” education policies are harming both boys and girls in Afghanistan, according to a report by non-governmental organization (NGO) Human Rights Watch (HRW) released this Wednesday.

The report documents Taliban policies and practices since they took over the country in August 2021 that have jeopardized the education of Afghan boys: “This includes the dismissal of female teachers, increased use of corporal punishment and regressive changes to the curriculum “

“The Taliban is causing irreversible damage to the Afghan education system for both boys and girls,” said Sahar Fetrat, assistant women’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch and author of the report.
