According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), box office receipts from live shows amounted to 147.3 million euros in 2022, representing the highest figure since 1979.
According to the annual cultural statistics report 2022, published by INE this Thursday, “there has been a strong recovery in live performances, with the number of performances, tickets sold and revenues exceeding pre-pandemic levels.”
The data shows that in 2022, live shows such as concerts, theater and dance events attracted 14.9 million viewers and generated €147.3 million in box office revenue.
In comparison, 2021 saw box office receipts of €28 million and live performances only €3.6 million.
In 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, these figures were 16.9 million viewers and €125.3 million in revenue.
According to extensive data analysis, the €147.3 million revenue recorded in 2022 represents the highest profit generated from live performances in Portugal since 1979.
Also according to INE, of the 14.9 million viewers recorded in 2022, the majority (8.2 million) watched live performances with tickets offered, meaning that €147.3 million in revenue was generated from the sale of 6.6 million tickets.
In 2022, music concerts also attracted the highest number of spectators (8.2 million) and generated the highest box office receipts (108.7 million euros).
It should also be noted that the average ticket price for live performances in 2022 reached 22.2 euros, which is eight euros more than in 2021.
The highest ticket prices were for pop/rock concerts (average 35.2 euros), and the cheapest for circus performances (average 5.2 euros).
In 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, the average ticket price for a live performance (music, theater, dance, etc.) was 20.8 euros.
