PSP director says police officers should be treated the same as SP members

This Thursday, the National Director of the Public Security Police said that PSP police officers should receive the same remuneration as SP members, adding that he conveyed to the guardianship body that the police should be “recognized in the same way.”

“I am naturally pleased that organizations fight for the interests of their employees, and I think that this is the work that the judicial police have done with the Ministry of Justice. and the women who work in the PSP are also recognized in the same way,” José Barros Correia told Lusa at the end of the inaugural ceremony for the 2023/2024 academic year at the Instituto Superior de Ciências Policiais e Segurança Interna, in Lisbon.

The PSP director was asked if he believed there was disparate treatment between police officers after the government last week approved the payment of a PJ career travel allowance, which in some cases could represent an increase of almost €700. per month.

“I’m glad that the joint venture and the Ministry of Justice were able to find the best solutions for their specialists; after all, this is what we want for our own,” he explained.

José Barros Correia noted that he had already expressed to the Minister of the Interior the need to revise the salary tables for PSP police officers, having previously warned him and soon after the approval of the PJ allowance.

“Yesterday [quarta-feira] In Porto, I did this to the minister, was with him and, naturally, said what I thought about this,” he emphasized.

On Monday, the national director sent an email to all PSP staff saying he felt it was his “duty to alert the oversight body to the need to review PSP police pay tables, whether through increased remuneration.” rates, whether through increased additions to the force and security services, and through continued efforts to improve facilities, equipment and police vehicles.”

José Barros Correia also writes that he was not aware of the government’s intention to assign an additional mission to the joint venture.

Following this measure, the PSP and GNR structures expressed outrage at this treatment, which they say is unequal and the difference in income in relation to the judicial police, and on Wednesday an unprecedented meeting of six PSP trade unions and GNR social-professional associations took place, in which they decided to hold several protests.

Asked about the issue at a press conference after the Council of Ministers meeting, the Presidential Minister asked the next government to approve new salary allowances for the security forces, justifying the regulation of the PJ allowance as the completion of a process already underway. .
