At least 11 people died Friday in Tezcaltitlan, a city in central Mexico, after violent clashes between people and criminals trying to extort money from them, local authorities said.
“The death of 14 people was recorded, 11 of whom appeared to belong to a criminal group and three were local residents,” Mexico City’s secretariat of state said in a statement, adding that four were wounded, shot dead and two more were missing. .
According to the Mexican press, the criminals turned out to be members of the criminal group La Familia Michoacana, who went to an agricultural village in Tezcaltitlan to extort money from residents. The villagers organized themselves to find them and confront them.
