Heavy rain that hit the tourist town of Angra dos Reis in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro in the final hours of Saturday killed at least two people and left 312 others homeless. The storm flooded much of the city, and areas were still flooded Saturday afternoon.
The two fatal victims were an elderly couple who lived in a private nursing home in the Bracui area, one of the worst-hit regions, as the river flowing through that part of Angra dos Reis overflowed its banks and its waters joined those already accumulated in the river. , rain and invaded the establishment. Another 25 elderly people at the scene were hastily taken down one by one, rescued and taken to safe areas, but when the couple’s turn came, both were already dead, apparently drowned.
In just 24 hours, 250 millimeters of rain fell in beautiful Angra dos Reis, a tropical paradise prized by famous Brazilians and foreigners. This was expected throughout December, traditionally a rainy month in Brazil.
Homeless people were taken to public schools in areas not hit as hard by the storm, and the city council called for donations of clothing, drinking water and personal hygiene products for those displaced from their homes. On Saturday afternoon, city council and civil protection officials were still carrying out a fuller survey of the damage and the number of casualties, which is likely to increase.
