Nagasaki Governor Kengo Oishi skipped the national conference to meet Cristiano Ronaldo and watch Al-Nasr’s game against PSG, the Japanese press reported.
The Nagasaki government announced that Oishi would miss the meeting to attend to “official duties.” These issues arose following Oishi’s visit to Portugal in June, during which cooperation agreements were signed with the Portuguese government in several areas.
On the afternoon of the conference, July 25, the governor traveled to Osaka to watch a friendly match between the Saudis from Al-Nasr and the French from PSG.
The next day, Oishi attended Nagasaki publicity meetings organized by a private company linked to Ronaldo.
The governor spoke with the Portuguese footballer and tried to convince him to help promote the region he leads. Ronaldo has not yet responded to the request.
Oishi claims he paid for the ticket with his own money because he wanted to “see Ronaldo before talking to him.”
Oishi’s attitude attracted much criticism, with several Japanese accusing him of abusing his position as governor and calling for his resignation.
