Woman with high-risk pregnancy leaves Texas after being denied abortion

Kate Cox, an American woman who asked a Texas court for permission to have an emergency abortion due to health problems, will leave the state to continue voluntary termination of pregnancy, Reuters reports.

Recall that this Saturday the Texas Supreme Court temporarily blocked a lower court decision allowing abortions for pregnant women at 20 weeks to protect their health.

The Attorney General’s Office said in a complaint filed in Supreme Court that Kate Cox “falls far short of demonstrating” that she meets the criteria for a medical exception.

On November 27, Cox’s fetus was diagnosed with trisomy 18, a genetic abnormality that typically results in miscarriage or death soon after birth. According to the woman, continuing the pregnancy also threatens her health and fertility.

“Kate’s case showed the world that abortion bans are dangerous for pregnant women and that exceptions don’t work,” Nancy Northrup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement quoted by the news agency.
