In seven years and nine months as head of state, since March 2016, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has vetoed most parliamentary laws, a total of 30 decrees, including today.
Last week it vetoed changes to the statutes of engineers, architects, nurses, lawyers, doctors and now barristers and barristers, as well as the legal regime for lawyers and barristers – seven decrees out of a package of 21 that parliament passed. approved on October 13 by votes for PS.
These vetoes are applied approximately one month before the dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic, which must be issued by decree of the President of the Republic on January 15, at a time when early adoption of the law is announced on March 10, and the Government is limited to administrative acts. after the resignation of the prime minister.
According to the Constitution, in the presence of a political veto, the Assembly of the Republic can confirm the vote of the absolute majority of the deputies currently in power – 116 out of 230, in which case the President of the Republic will have to publish the diploma.
Earlier, on October 27, the head of state vetoed the decree-law regulating the reprivatization of TAP. This was the sixth time he had exercised this power in relation to government legislation.
