Antonio Costa pledges all his solidarity to the future PS leader

Outgoing Social Democratic Party secretary general António Costa called for the socialists to be mobilized in elections this Friday and Saturday to choose their successor, and added that the new leader would count on their full solidarity.

These positions are contained in a message that António Costa sent this morning to all PS members on the first of two days of direct elections to elect the party’s new general secretary.

“This Friday and Saturday we will elect our new leader. I am confident that the democratic choice of the socialists will give new energy to the PS. Therefore, I encourage everyone to take part in these elections, making this vote a great confirmation of the strength of the PS,” wrote the outgoing Socialist leader.

In the same message, António Costa then stressed that he would support his successor regardless of the choice of his party members.

“The new Secretary General will count on all my solidarity and, of course, on the support of all activists in the pluralistic unity that is the hallmark of our PS,” he added.

Today and Saturday, some 60,000 socialist activists are choosing António Costa’s successor as secretary general of the Socialist Party in elections that include José Luis Carneiro, Pedro Nuno Santos and Daniel Adriano. In addition to the new party leader, the Socialists will elect 1,400 delegates (to which 1,100 will be added with inalienable rights) to the national congress, which will take place from January 5 to 7 at the International Fair in Lisbon.

This Friday, FAUL activists and representatives of the federations of Aveiro, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Évora, Guarda, Leiria, Portalegre, Oeste, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real will vote. On Saturday, elections will be held in the federations of Algarve, Baixo Alentejo, Braga, Coimbra, Porto, Santarem, Viseu, the Azores and Madeira.

Voting ends at 23:00 (tentative time) on Saturday. The first election results will be announced at 23:30 at the PS national headquarters by the President of the Congress Organizing Committee (COC), Pedro do Carmo.
