More than 900 medical workers have already signed an open letter addressed to various professional orders demanding an “immediate and definitive” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the liberation of Palestine, announced this Friday.
The open letter was sent to seven presidents of professional orders in the health sector.
In a statement sent to the editorial office, the signatories, citing Al Jazeera, stated that “Israel has already attacked 364 medical facilities and more than 300 medical workers have been killed,” emphasizing that of the 36 hospitals in the Gaza Strip, only 11 are “partially functional.” “
“As health professionals, we remember that we do not recognize ourselves in the silence of the institutions that represent us, and that we refuse to accept support for war crimes that collectively destroy and punish the entire Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip, home to more than 18 thousand people. was dead,” emphasizes medical subscriber Ana Paula Cruz.
“We will not remain inert in the face of the violence and deliberate killings of fellow professionals and the destruction of hospitals by the State of Israel,” he adds.
The medical professionals who signed the agreement recall that they continue to wait for a response from the professional orders representing them, as well as a request for a meeting made on November 26, which was responded only by the Order of Psychologists, who scheduled a meeting for Thursday.
On Saturday, some followers will join the human cordon of the United Platform for Palestine Solidarity in Lisbon.
The action will take place in front of the Santa Maria Hospital, and the cordon will pass through the embassies of the United States of America and Israel and end at the Alfredo da Costa maternity hospital.
The war in the Gaza Strip was triggered by an attack of unprecedented proportions carried out on October 7 in Israel by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, which has been in power in the Palestinian enclave since 2007 and classified as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Community. Union and Israel.
The Hamas attack killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and about 240 hostages, according to Israeli authorities.
In response, Israel declared a war to “eradicate” Hamas, which began with cuts in food, water, electricity and fuel supplies to the Gaza Strip and daily bombings, followed by a ground offensive in the north of the territory, which meanwhile expanded to the south.
The war between Israel and Hamas, which entered its 70th day this Friday and continues to threaten to spread throughout the Middle East region, has so far killed more than 18,800 people in the Gaza Strip, most of them civilians, and more than 50 000 were injured. The latest report from local authorities and some 1.9 million displaced people (85% of the population), according to the UN, are plunging the poor Palestinian enclave into a serious humanitarian crisis.
In the West Bank and East Jerusalem, 281 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or as a result of settler attacks since October 7.
