US says there is ‘no point’ for Israel to occupy Gaza Strip

The US says there is “no point” for Israel to occupy the Gaza Strip once military operations end. “The Israeli people need and deserve to live in peace and security with their neighbors in an integrated, vibrant and stable region,” the US national security adviser said. Jake Sullivan visited Israel for the second time since the October 7 attacks and reaffirmed US support for the country. He also said the war would shift to a new focus, more directed against the Hamas leadership, but did not specify when the new phase would begin.

This Friday, Sullivan met with the Palestinian President. Mahmoud Abbas called on the United States to intervene and force Israel to stop attacks on Palestine. Israel has stepped up its bombing campaign and says it has destroyed a Hamas command center in an operation that involved planes, tanks and ground troops, using a Moaz drone for the first time. During the operation, Israeli troops discovered the bodies of two 19-year-old soldiers taken hostage by Hamas on October 7.
