Two men, aged 32 and 44, died when a car and a nine-seater van collided with farm workers on Monday morning at Estrada Nacional 387 in Cuba, Beja district.
The dead were agricultural workers. The 32-year-old man has Romanian citizenship, and the 44-year-old has Moldovan citizenship.
The accident also resulted in two serious injuries and seven minor injuries.
The alarm was raised around 6:44 a.m.
The EN387 motorway connecting Vidigueira with Ferreira do Alentejo remained closed to traffic at 09:00.
The victims were taken to Beja Hospital. The cause of the accident could have been poorly calculated overtaking.
Firefighters from Beja, Cuba and Vidigueira, VMER from Beja and Évora and GNR were called to the scene. A total of 29 operators are working on site, supported by 14 vehicles.
