The results of a survey of safety in public and private premises released Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics show that more than 176,000 people say they were victims of childhood sexual abuse.
Globally, more than two-fifths of the population, about 3.4 million people, have suffered at least one situation of violence during their lifetime, with Madeira being the region with the highest proportion (48.1%) and Alentejo the region with the highest proportion , where the share is lower. (37.8%).
The prevalence of violence is higher among the more educated population (49.4%), and violence in childhood, before the age of 15, is more common among the less educated population. Victims of non-partner violence were those who reported violence the most (66.8%), and victims of childhood sexual abuse were those who most silenced them (29.4%).
