Nurses begin nearly two-week strike

This Thursday, nurses begin a nearly two-week strike that will last until January 2, demanding equality with senior technical workers in public administration.

The strike has been called by the Independent All United Nurses Union (SITEU), which is demanding a €52 pay rise to match the €1,333.35 that senior public service professionals receive from level 16 onwards.

According to union president Gorethe Pimentel, the issue was referred to the Ministry of Health, which pledged to resolve the situation by the end of the year, but the government’s dismissal left the nurses without a response.

On Monday, a group of citizens, including doctors such as Sobrinho Simões and Julio Machado Vaz, called on health workers to suspend, until a new government takes power, forms of fighting that jeopardize patients’ access to health care.

“We call on trade unions and individual health workers to suspend strikes and other forms of struggle that could in any way jeopardize access to health care until a voting interlocutor can again emerge,” explained the group, which includes doctors and nurses. , as well as artists, teachers and musicians in the petition, which has more than 500 followers.

In addition to the SITEU strike, an overtime strike called by the Democratic Union of Nurses of Portugal (Sindepor) has been taking place since November 3 and will last until the end of the year.
