This Thursday, the Liberal leader said that the party will go to the polls alone, and not as part of a coalition, because he is confident in the ideas he represents and out of “a matter of responsibility”, since “there is a country that is waiting” for IL.
In his speech during the dinner rally in Lisbon, Rui Rocha did not speak directly about the electoral coalition announced this Thursday by PSD and SDS-PP for the next legislative and European elections, but he explained once again the reasons why the IL decided that it would be standing alone in the election race in March.
“We will present our ideas, our candidates, our lists, because there is a country that is waiting for the Liberal Initiative,” he emphasized.
According to the liberal president, “IL bears a huge responsibility” and will say “a gift to this country, which is waiting for liberal solutions.” Liberals will stand alone in elections “with the confidence” they have in their ideas.
“But this is first and foremost a question of responsibility, because not only me, we are not the hundreds who are here today, there are many tens, many hundreds of thousands of Portuguese, I really believe that there are millions of Portuguese who want this liberal country to that we can grow through our work, that we can trust institutions, that we can believe that our children have a better future,” he defended.
Rui Rocha rejected any coalition from the very beginning also because “the country no longer goes there with patches” or “with minor changes.”
“It is not enough to change the government, the policies must be changed, the country must be changed. IL is the only party that has such courage, that has such ambitions,” he assured.
The presidents of the PSD and SDS-PP, Luis Montenegro and Nuno Melo, will propose to the national bodies of their parties to create an electoral coalition “Democratic Alliance” for the legislative elections in March and the European elections in June, which also includes “independent individuals”, it was announced today in joint statement.
