A man suspected of attempted qualified murder committed during an act of disrespect in a cafe in Caldas da Rainha has been detained by the Judicial Police and will await trial under house arrest, the Judicial Police (PJ) said on Friday.
A 28-year-old man, a construction worker, is suspected of committing the crime of qualified murder in the form of attempted stabbing on November 1 in this municipality of the Leiria district.
The victim, also a man, “survived only thanks to a call for help from other people who were in the same cafe,” Avelino Lima, director of the Leiria Judicial Police, told Lusa.
In his statement, the SP explained that after an argument, the suspect inflicted “several blows with a sharp weapon, especially in the chest and upper abdomen.”
“Only the prompt intervention of emergency medical services prevented the attack, which led to the death of the victim,” you can also read.
After the attack, “the accused left the place, going to an unknown location and without providing any assistance to the victim,” who, according to Avelino Lima, “was hospitalized for more than a week.”
An investigation carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Leiria Judicial Police “led to the identification of the suspect” and his whereabouts.
The investigation ended Thursday with the arrest of the assailant under an arrest warrant issued by the Justice Department.
The detainee was taken to the judicial authorities and a coercive measure was applied to him in the form of an obligation to stay at home.
