According to preliminary data from the Christmas and New Year operation released this Monday, the GNR recorded 684 traffic accidents on the roads, resulting in one death and 211 injuries, of which 17 were serious.
The GNR said in a statement that the death was a woman who was hit by a car on Sunday in the town of Türkel in the municipality of Alcobaça.
The GNR’s preliminary report also said that between 00:00 Friday and 23:59 Sunday, 24,494 drivers were tested, of which 268 were driving under the influence of alcohol and 140 were arrested for having blood alcohol levels considered an offence.
56 drivers were also arrested for not having a legal driving license.
In total, during the same period, 4,609 violations of traffic rules were identified, of which the State Police highlights speeding (1,763), lack of periodic technical inspection (402), absence or improper use of seat belts or child seats for transporting children (163), lack of insurance (133) and misuse of mobile phones (112).
GNR 2023/2024 Christmas and New Year events began on December 15th and will end on January 2nd.
