A Venezuelan non-governmental organization (NGO) recorded 6,973 violent deaths in the country between January and December this year, of which 1,956 were committed by criminals and 953 during police intervention.
The data is part of the Venezuelan Observatory on Violence (OVV)’s 2023 Annual Report on Violence, which says the “premeditation” of the remaining 4,064 violent deaths is under investigation.
The NGO indicated that these figures “represent a reversal of the recent trend” with a “25% decrease compared to 2021 and 2022, when the total number of violent deaths was 9,447 and 9,367 respectively”, indicating “stagnation with no decrease or increase ” , in relation to violent deaths in the previous biennium.”
