The fire broke out this Sunday afternoon in the maternity ward of the Abrantes Hospital due to a breakdown of computer equipment, with no casualties reported, a civil defense source told Lusa.
Speaking to Lusa, a source from the Medio Tejo Subregional Civil Protection Command said the fire alarm was raised at 12:30 p.m. and that the fire had been extinguished since 1:40 p.m.
According to the same source, the fire occurred on the 5th floor of the Abrantes Hospital (Santarem district), where the obstetrics and gynecology service is located, and was caused by “computer equipment.”
In a conversation with Lusa, a source from the Centro Hospitalar do Médio Tejo (CHMT), which owns the Abrantes Hospital, said that the department’s administration has already launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
The same source explained that it was medical workers who managed to extinguish the flames, and firefighters subsequently began removing the smoke. No injuries were reported after the fire as the maternity hospital had been closed since Saturday.
“At the moment, we do not yet have a forecast for the resumption of this service, since we have not yet been able to determine the damage. The perimeter is closed and no one can access it,” he explained. Firefighters from Abrantes, Sardola and Constantia, as well as PSP, were at the scene.
