Luton captain will make decision about future after suffering cardiac arrest on the pitch

Luton footballer Tom Lockyer, who suffered a cardiac arrest during an English league game against Bournemouth on December 16, announced this Sunday that he will consult with specialists to determine his future.

The 29-year-old Luton captain had a defibrillator implanted after suffering a cardiac arrest during the game and was eventually suspended and left hospital after a five-day stay.

“I will do everything in my power, in every way possible, to help the team. It remains to be seen to what extent I will have to meet with experts in the new year,” the Wales international said in a post on social media.

Lockyer also thanked the “heroic actions” of the players, staff, doctors and paramedics, saying they saved his life, and praised the fans’ support.

“Seeing the banners on the field, hearing my name being sung, meant a lot to me and my family,” he stressed, and also thanked the club for their support.

This was the second time Lockyer was knocked unconscious during a match. The first time occurred in May, during the play-off final of the English Second Division Championship, due to cardiac arrhythmia.

Luton are currently 18th in the English league with 15 points in the relegation zone.
