Japanese nuclear power plant detects sea level rise after earthquake

The Shika nuclear power plant in central Japan has recorded a rise in sea levels since Monday’s earthquake and found damage to a wall protecting the reactor from a tsunami, NHK reported on Wednesday.

While the plant’s operator, Hokuriku Electric Power, announced early Tuesday that it had detected no major fluctuations in water levels, monitoring in the late afternoon found a rise of three meters since 5:45 p.m., according to Japanese television. and 18:00 local time (8:45 and 9:00 in Lisbon) on Monday.

These levels were recorded about an hour and a half after the magnitude 7.6 earthquake, whose epicenter was on the Noto Peninsula – about 80 kilometers from the site of the nuclear power plant – and which led to the activation of a tsunami warning system for 18 hours. .
