Coach Dorival Junior will become the new Brazilian football coach, replacing interim Fernando Diniz. This was announced on Monday by Sao Paulo, the club to which the coach belonged.
“Sao Paulo Football Club announces the resignation of coach Dorival Junior, who requested his dismissal in order to take charge of the Brazil national team,” Sao Paulo announced on Sunday.
The same statement includes comments from the coach who speaks of “the realization of a personal dream” that was only possible because he received “recognition for the work done in Sao Paulo.”
Dorival Junior, 61, has not yet been officially confirmed by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) as Brazil’s new coach, which could happen on Wednesday, Globo Esporte reported.
The invitation to the Sao Paulo coach came from the returning CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues.
Dorival Junior, coach since 2003, was most recently at Flamengo, with whom he won the Copa Libertadores and the Taca do Brasil in 2022.
