The average cost of emergency income support (PAER) is around €113, with 236,862 households covered so far, according to figures released by the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU) on Tuesday.
This rent support is part of a package of housing measures and is provided automatically, covering families with incomes up to income level 6 (about €38,600 per year) and with a rent effort rate of more than 35%.
According to data published on Tuesday, 258,661 people, for a total of 236,862 families, are currently covered by this support. More than 50,000 families have meanwhile joined the roughly 185,000 who began receiving this support in the middle of last year, with payments retroactive to January 2023.
Part of the reason for this increase is that several thousand families did not initially start receiving support because they did not provide their IBAN or because they had income indicators above 100%, which required verification of these situations.
This support, which has a maximum monthly cost of €200, is provided until 31 December 2028, but is subject to annual review so that the level of effort can be assessed and whether the tenant continues to meet the requirements in terms of income, example example.
For 2024, to mitigate the impact of the 6.94% rent renewal, the government approved a measure that automatically updates extraordinary support by adding 4.94% to the cost of monthly income, with this enhancement even provided. This implies exceeding the current maximum support amount (which is 200 euros).
From a practical point of view and according to the model of the Ministry of Housing sent to Lusa when the strengthening of the measure was approved, this means that a person with a salary of 1600 euros per month and whose income increased from 800 euros in 2023 to 855.50 euros starting from this month, you will receive additional support of 39.50 euros, which is added to the 200 you have already received.
In other words, of the annual rent increase of almost 667 euros, 474 euros (about 71% of the increase) will be supported by increased support.
