IPMA expects temperatures to fall until Friday and could reach -5C in the northern and central parts of the country.

Mainland Portugal recorded temperatures “slightly lower than normal for this time of year” from Thursday to Friday, which could reach -5C in the northern and central parts of the country, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português) said. do Mar e da Atmosfera (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere) (IPMA).

In a statement, the institute explained that mainland Portugal was exposed to a mass of polar air, resulting in temperatures slightly below normal for this time of year.

After a break between January 9 and 10, and January 11 and 12, temperatures “will drop again, especially the minimum temperature, due to the intrusion of a new mass of polar air with a continental trajectory,” he stressed.

According to IPMA, this new polar air mass will gradually impact the north of the Iberian Peninsula and then the southern regions, although with less impact.

The IPMA announced that the Bragança and Guarda areas are on a yellow alert for cold weather from 00:00 Thursday until 23:00 Friday.

Minimum temperatures are expected to be below 5°C in the interior this morning, with temperatures below 0°C in the north-east of Trás os Montes and in the mountainous areas of the northern and central regions.

“The progressive influence of the above-mentioned air mass will be marked by noticeable cooling late on the 11th, with dawn on the 12th being the coldest of the episode,” the institute noted.

Minimum temperatures of -5 to -0C are expected on Friday across much of the country’s northern and central interior, with “lower values likely to be recorded locally”.

Most of the area will experience minimum temperatures below 5°C, with just a few spots on the central and south coasts.

The IPMA also stressed that “ice or frost is expected to form, especially in the northern and central parts of the country, which could have a significant impact on road traffic.”

Maximum temperatures are expected to be cooler from today to Friday, with the IPMA indicating that the inland north and central should range between 3C and 8C, with some locations in the North East falling below 3C. Trás os Montes and Beira High, especially at the highest points.

Also this Thursday, “there is still a chance of scattered showers in the mountains in the far north, which, if they pass, should become snow in the mountains,” he further explained.
