The Church of Santa Casa da Misericordia in Castelo de Vide has put up for sale for 350 thousand euros the Church of Santo Amaro, which was closed for worship and once served as a warehouse for a furniture factory. The closing date for purchase offers is this Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.; The next day, the proposals will be opened at a meeting of the Administrative Council.
In the announcement of the sale, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Castelo de Vide explains that the Church of Santo Amaro is an urban building consisting of three floors, a backyard and an attic, with a total area of 1350 m2.
The city council of Castelo de Vide has already expressed interest in the acquisition, but will not submit any proposals at this stage, Mayor Antonio Pita said in an interview with Radio Portalegre. But if no interested parties emerge, the council will meet with the local Misericórdia to try to buy the property at a “fair price,” adds António Pita.
The Church of Santo Amaro, classified as a Monument of Public Interest in mid-2014, is the result of a 19th-century reconstruction of a small hermitage built in 1494 on the outskirts of the city of Alentejo and whose ownership passed in 1534 to Santa Casa da Misericordia de Castelo de Vide, founder of the adjacent hospital.
Baroque façade
The church has a Baroque facade and a portal with columns. Inside is a painted stone image of the main altar, imitating carvings.
Valuable testimony
The ruling classifying the church as a monument highlights it as a “valuable” testament to the erudite expression of the Alentejo Baroque.
Other sales
In addition to the church, Misericórdia has put two other properties up for sale: one on Monte Sete and the other on Calle Miguel Bombarda.
