Global Media workers went on strike on Wednesday demanding December wages and Christmas bonuses after GMG’s executive committee, led by Jose Paulo Fafe, announced it would urgently negotiate layoffs with 150-200 workers and embark on a restructuring. this, he said, was necessary to avoid the “more than foreseeable bankruptcy of the group.”
The strike was called by the Union of Journalists (SJ), the Union of Manufacturing, Energy and Environmental Workers of the North (SITE-Norte) and the Union of Telecommunications and Audiovisual Workers (STT), covering all workers, regardless of function.
Amnesty International – Portugal also said on Wednesday that the fragility of the country’s press was a “clear sign of instability” in democracy, expressing concern about the situation at GMG.
