The PS Secretary General announced this Saturday that he wants to receive a platform from the security forces next week, highlighting the “achievements” made by the government, but promised to intensify efforts to strengthen the police and security of the NDP.
Pedro Nuno Santos outlined this position in a speech at the opening of the PS National Commission in Coimbra, where he was heard by his former opponent in the Socialist leadership race and current Minister of the Interior, José Luis Carneiro.
In the final part of his speech, he stated: “We want to continue the efforts already started and therefore want to be the first, if possible, to have a platform representing the security forces.”
“We want to do this as soon as possible, we are ready to receive them next week,” he emphasized.
Regarding the protests by PSP and GNR agents, the Socialist leader said António Costa’s government has made “great efforts to respond” to the security forces’ questions, but added that “there are problems that have not yet been resolved.”
“Over the last eight years we have done very important work, we have made great progress in terms of improving pay for security forces and working conditions. The work that José Luis Carneiro did was very important. We are proud of this. this work and the progress achieved in terms of equipment, accommodation and remuneration,” he said.
Pedro Nuno Santos even stressed that “there is a commitment that, in addition to a significant increase in salaries in 2024, the salaries of security forces will increase by an average of 20% by 2026.”
He went on to talk about the other side of the coin.
“In this difficult moment, we must begin by remembering what we have already done. But we need to reinvigorate, continue and deepen our appreciation for those who have dedicated their lives to caring for the collective security of our people,” emphasis.
The PS Secretary General later stated that “there is no democracy or rule of law that functions without motivated, respected and recognized security forces.” And he left a promise: “We want to do more, we want to respect the police and the security of the GPR.”
