Odivelas Monastery welcomes students again

The Odivelas Institute, a former boarding school for girls, will once again welcome students, but now as a university residence, which in addition to the hostel will also become a space for research, culture and leisure, and which will be open to the public for the first time.

The Monastery of Odivelas, or the Monastery of San Dinis and San Bernardo, a national monument, was built in 1295 by King D. Dinis, who is buried there. In 1902, the Instituto de Odivelas (Army School for Girls) appeared here, which operated there until 2015.

Work is already underway to provide 240 new beds for ISCTE students in the 2025/2026 academic year, each of whom will pay about 200 euros per month. According to Mayor Hugo Martins, the total investment is about 50 million euros. The building will also house a museum (circle of monasteries, church and tomb of D. Dinis), it will house the Conservatory of Music of D. Dinis, which has more than 600 students, as well as a thousand students from the Higher Institute of Lisbon. e Vale do Tagus, formerly ISCE. The gardens are also being restored and opened to the public.
