Josef Fritzl, the man who held his daughter captive in Austria for 24 years, will be able to be released “because he is no longer a danger,” a lawyer quoted by the newspaper said. Sky News.
The man, now 88, fathered seven children with his daughter Elizabeth while he kept her prisoner in his basement. In 2009, he was sentenced to life in prison for the kidnapping, rape, incest, enslavement and negligent homicide of one of his children. He is being held in a high-security unit for mentally ill offenders at Stein prison in northeastern Austria, but under that country’s law he will be able to appeal his sentence this year.
A medical report published by local media shows that Fritzl suffers from dementia. The lawyer says the client “has the right to be treated with human dignity,” which “can only be done in a nursing home, not in a prison.”
The lawyer said she is convinced Fritz has “honest, sincere and deep remorse” for what he did to his daughter.
Remember the case
Josef Fritzl sexually abused Elisabeth from the age of 11. In 1984, when his daughter turned 18, he lured her to the basement of the family home in Amstetten and told everyone that the young girl had run away to join a cult.
During her captivity, Elizabeth was subjected to inhumane conditions and was raped several times by her father, who eventually became pregnant seven times.
Josef Fritzl’s crimes became public knowledge when one of his children with Elisabeth became seriously ill and had to be taken to hospital.
The case received widespread media coverage due to the victim’s imprisonment and all the crimes committed by Josef Fritz during this period.
