Ford plans to lay off 3,200 people in Germany

North American car maker Ford will cut 3,200 jobs in Germany, mostly in management and “design,” a spokesman for German union IG Metall told AFP today.

The cuts were announced amid growing concerns about a move into Europe’s auto industry after Washington announced massive subsidies to US-made electric vehicles.

The job cuts were announced to the press after a general meeting of workers and will significantly affect production in Cologne, but according to an IG Metall spokesman, “all factories in Germany” are at risk.

“We are extremely concerned about the future of German development units and, more generally, the future of Ford’s operations in Germany,” the union said in a statement.

The job cuts should affect the “product development” department of the Cologne division, where “2,500 of the 3,800 employees must leave the company,” IG Metall said, adding that there are 220 more jobs at another research center in Aachen.

The union also said that “about 20% of administrative positions” in the country could be at risk.

So far, the North American Automobile Group has not commented on this information, according to AFP.
