Between 2009 and 2022, 20 people injected themselves with lethal doses of a drug used to euthanize animals. This substance is illegal in Portugal, but in other countries it is used in death care cases.
The drug, according to Newspaperwas discovered in 20 autopsies performed by the National Institute of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Science at the request of the Department of Public Administration.
Infarmed has confirmed that this substance can be purchased in Portugal by some organizations through a “special use authorization” from this regulatory body. Only individuals with “medical/clinical, veterinary, scientific and educational interests” may apply for a permit.
However, this substance is used for other purposes. The Justice Department reports that over the past 13 years, 20 people have used the drug in lethal doses to cause their own death.
Because it is only detected in autopsies, performed only on suspicion of a crime or violent death, there may be more cases in the country that have never been detected.
The substance can enter Portugal through websites that sell the drug illegally and without a prescription. Orders pass through Portuguese customs, however, according to JN, the tax office has not registered any seizures of this drug.
