ERC clarifies that illegal dissemination of journalistic content is an offense punishable by imprisonment

The regulatory council of the ERC – the Social Communications Regulatory Authority clarified this Wednesday that the illegal dissemination of journalistic content on the Internet constitutes a crime punishable by up to three years’ imprisonment and a fine of 150 to 250 days.

In its statement, the ERC Regulatory Council states that it “condemns the illegal distribution of newspapers and magazines through social networks and email, as well as the distribution of unregistered websites that pretend to be media outlets without clearly identifying the sources and authors who appropriate the news from the media.”

“The existing legislative and regulatory framework does not allow the ERC to intervene in these situations as intellectual property issues are at stake,” but the regulator is concerned “about the damage this situation causes to the media sector, which sees its content pirated.”
