The demonstration in defense of the right to housing, planned by the Casa Para Viver platform for January 27, will take place in 19 cities throughout the country, the Porta a Porta movement – For the Right to Housing – announced this Thursday.
According to the movement, protests are planned in Lisbon, Porto, Setubal, Braga, Aveiro, Faro, Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira, Leiria, Benavente, Coimbra, Viseu, Funchal, Covilha, Évora, Beja, Sines and Portalegre.
The demonstration, the third for the right to housing planned by a platform of about a hundred associations, is justified because “problems persist.”
In the context of the legislative elections scheduled for March 10, the platform intends to “commemorate the election campaign” and oblige candidates to obtain housing, taking into account the demands they already presented to political parties in June.
These proposals include regulating and reducing rents and bank charges, ending evictions where there is no alternative housing, putting vacant properties owned by large owners on the market, ending incentives for property speculation and property investment funds, and ending benefits for non-permanent residents. .
In parallel, they defend significant investments in public and cooperative housing.
Two protests carried out by the movement brought thousands of people onto the streets on April 1 and September 24, 2023.
