The National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) recorded 22 incidents caused by bad weather between 0:00 and 7:00 this Friday morning, most of which occurred in the Algarve and related to flooding on public roads.
“Despite the rain, which sometimes fell with some intensity, 22 incidents were recorded throughout the country, with the majority recorded in the Algarve with 10. In Lisbon we only had three,” said commander José Rodrigues.
Regarding the typology, José Rodríguez said that there were floods on public roads, mass movements and the fall of structures, without casualties or serious damage.
“82 first responders were involved in the incidents, supported by 29 vehicles,” he said.
According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), mainland Portugal is today suffering from the Juan Depression, sometimes with heavy rains.
In addition to precipitation, “thunderstorms and convective bursts” are also possible until late today.
IPMA also predicts snowfall at the highest points of the Serra da Estrela, starting early today and “which is expected to accumulate above 1400/1600 metres, gradually decreasing to 1200/1400 metres”.
In addition, winds are expected to increase “on the coast south of Cabo Mondego and in the highlands, especially in the Center and South, with gusts of up to 70 km/h.”
The IPMA has issued a yellow warning for rainfall and snowfall.
This Friday, the areas of Évora, Castelo Branco, Faro, Setúbal, Santarém, Beja and Portalegre are under a yellow warning until 12:00, and in Lisbon and Leiria until 9:00.
Guarda and Castelo Branco will be under a yellow warning for snow until 12:00 today.
A yellow warning is issued whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities due to weather conditions.
