Parents of boy with shaken baby syndrome sentenced to five years probation

The mother of a child hospitalized with injuries associated with shaken baby syndrome and her partner were sentenced this Friday to five years in prison, suspended, and were banned from having contact with the child during that period.

The Vila Real court sentenced the 20-year-old mother and her 30-year-old partner to committing as a co-author the crime of causing grievous bodily harm, classified by obvious competition as the crime of aggravated domestic violence.

The defendants were given a single sentence of five years, suspended for the same period, and were prohibited from having contact with the child for the same five-year period, must undergo psychiatric observation as deemed necessary, and must pay compensation. 25 thousand euros for a baby who was three months old when he was hospitalized in the summer of 2022.
