Journalists meeting at the Congress of Journalists unanimously approved a general strike this Sunday and instructed the Union of Journalists to determine the date of the strike.
The proposal for a general strike was approved this Sunday afternoon, in the final minutes of the Congress of Journalists, when congressmen applauded and applauded the decision to call a general strike.
According to the proposal, “the seriousness of the conditions in which journalistic activity is carried out in Portugal” is becoming increasingly serious: journalists are subject to low wages, instability, forced to work long shifts, subject to pressure and sometimes even attacks, so it considers that “in a very serious moment for journalism”, “consistent gestures” are needed.
“The moment is here and now. We have to stop. Just stop. Demand that we finally be listened to. Stop giving news, making direct calls, abandoning editorial offices, press conferences and election campaigns. We do not put newspapers on newsstands, We do not broadcast news on the radio, we do not broadcast news, we do not publish them on social networks. Let’s show how necessary our work is. Let’s walk together, leaving no one behind,” the proposal reads.
A general strike during the election campaign, as envisaged in the proposal, was a topic of discussion among congressmen, so it was decided that the Union of Journalists would fix a date and call a general strike.
The last general strike of journalists took place in 1982, said Pedro Coelho, president of the Congress of Journalists.
The problems of the Global Media group (workers continue to receive unpaid wages and there is a threat of collective dismissal of up to 200 people) dominated the focus of the V Congress of Journalists, at a time of crisis in journalism, with poor working conditions and a crisis in the funding model of journalistic organizations.
The Fifth Congress of Journalists, which began on Thursday, ended this Sunday in Lisbon (São Jorge Cinema), with almost 800 delegates registered.
