At least 25 people were killed and more than 20 injured on Sunday in Ukrainian shelling of a market in the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk.
The chairman of the local chamber, Alexey Kulemzin, said several artillery shells hit a busy area near the market in the city center. Footage from the scene shows several bodies lying in the street and passers-by in a state of shock.
The Kiev government did not comment on the attack, but Russia condemned what it called a “barbaric terrorist attack” carried out by Ukraine “using weapons supplied by the West.” “Russia categorically condemns this treacherous attack on civilians,” the Russian MNE said in a statement. The city of Donetsk is the capital of the region of the same name, which is one of four regions annexed by Russia at the end of 2022.
However, on Sunday Russian troops announced they had taken the town of Krokhmalnoye in the Kharkiv region, forcing the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops. On Thursday, Russia already announced the seizure of another village of Veseloye in the Donetsk region.
