At least 25 people were killed and more than 20 injured on Sunday in Ukrainian shelling of a market in the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk.
The chairman of the local chamber, Alexey Kulemzin, said several artillery shells hit a busy area near the market in the city center. Footage from the scene shows several bodies lying in the street and passers-by in a state of shock.
The Kiev government did not comment on the attack, but Russia condemned what it called a “barbaric terrorist attack” carried out by Ukraine “using weapons supplied by the West.” “Russia categorically condemns this treacherous attack on civilians,” the Russian MNE said in a statement. The city of Donetsk is the capital of the region of the same name, which is one of four regions annexed by Russia at the end of 2022.
