DHS confirms imported case of measles in 54-year-old man in the North

On Tuesday, the Directorate General of Health (DGS) confirmed an imported case of measles in a 54-year-old man not resident in Portugal and unrelated to two cases recently reported in the Lisbon region.

According to the DGS statement, this new case was detected in the northern region of the country and the man has no evidence of vaccination against the disease.

“This case was laboratory confirmed by the Dutor Ricardo Jorge National Institute of Health (INSA). This new case of measles has no known epidemiological link to previous cases,” the release note reads, adding that the person “is clinically well and is no longer infectious.”

The development of this case is being monitored by the GDS and other health authorities as part of the National Measles Elimination Programme, which is mainly based on confirmation of suspected cases and tracing of associated contacts.

In addition to explaining vaccination methods, the national health authority recommends that if anyone has been in contact with a person with suspected measles or has symptoms, call the health line 808242424.
