“Besides being my mother, she was my best friend. Almost two years after this terrible death, the body remains in Luxembourg. Neither the funeral nor the mourning could be held.” These are the words of Francisco Bastos, the son of Diana Santos, who was found dead, beheaded and dismembered in September 2022 in the French commune near the Luxembourg border where she lived and worked. Two men of Moroccan nationality have been named as suspects. One of them has been arrested.
Francisco and his family know little about the case. “I call the authorities there, but they don’t give me information. They say the body is still being examined. Complicating things is the fact that we don’t have money for a lawyer. It seems like our suffering doesn’t matter,” he said.
It is believed that the crime was motivated by a marriage of convenience between Diana and one of the suspects. “I don’t know what was the motive for this terrible crime. But I hope that one day the authorities will be able to give me this information, even if it hurts me.”
