A Braga court sentenced this Wednesday to two years and two months in prison a man from Barcelos who was caught driving without a license and who already has 13 other convictions for the same crime.
The sentence handed down this Wednesday relates to facts relating to July 19, 2021, when the accused was stopped by GNR officers in Macieira de Rates, Barcelos, and presented a document called “Provisional driving license”, which, according to the court, was not issued. competent authorities for this purpose.”
The court states that this is a “reproduction produced entirely by polychromatic inkjet printing and as such is not true.”
In court, the defendant argued that he bought this document in England 10 years ago in some stationery store, without subjecting it to any theoretical or practical testing.
He also stated that he did not know that the document was fake.
To the group of judges, these statements “appear to be unfounded and lacking in intelligibility, since the average person, literate or not, knows that obtaining a driving license for motor vehicles requires passing theoretical and practical examinations and that this is so.” in Portugal, in England and in any other country in Europe and the world.”
The accused, 59, was found guilty of driving without a valid license and forgery or falsification of documents.
In applying effective imprisonment, the court took into account that the defendant already had 13 convictions for driving without a legal home.
He also has convictions for dangerous driving of a road vehicle, injury to person, trespass, skilled theft, receiving, skilled disobedience and cruelty.
He is currently serving his sentence in jail at his home under electronic monitoring for an unrelated case.
However, the defendant enrolled in a driving school to obtain a license, but the registration period expired on October 22, 2023.
He told the court that he missed his registration deadline due to economic difficulties and difficulties due to the use of an electronic bracelet.
