This Wednesday, thousands of police and security guards gathered at Largo do Carmo, each with their own story. Duarte Almeida, 57, is the head of PSP. He works at the Sao Bento Palace in Lisbon and told CM that the PSP “never recognized his legal background.” Hugo Ribeiro, 42, works in the emergency and relief division of the GNR. It highlights “the distance soldiers are from home, the workload and the risk involved in performing the duties.” The march arrived at parliament at 19:30, and at 20:00 the funeral fireworks were played. Hundreds of policemen slept there.

“In 2004, when I joined the PSP, the national minimum wage was €300 and the minimum wage to join the PSP was €779. Today the minimum wage is 820 euros, and in PSP it is 908. That’s what everything says.”

“I am here because they equate us with PSP and GNR but this government is ridiculing us. There is a law that defines the risk in PSP and GNR and it does not apply to us.”
