European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde warned this Thursday that current tensions in the Middle East pose a “risk” to inflation in the eurozone.
“Inflation risks include increased geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, which could lead to higher energy prices and transport costs in the short term and harm global trade,” Christine Lagarde said at a press conference after the Governing Council meeting.
An ECB spokesman explained that the institution remains attentive to the possible impact on energy prices and the cost of maritime transport, while Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea pose a new threat to global trade.
