This Thursday, the Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP) demanded the speedy implementation of a scrappage incentive to combat the aging of the vehicle fleet. The measure, proposed several times by ACAP, is included in the state budget for 2024, with the government allocating 129 million euros for the recycling of around 45 thousand vehicles.
“The Portuguese vehicle fleet is still aging, especially compared to other European Union countries,” the association said this Thursday at the Auto Trade Forum, which took place in Lisbon. According to ACAP Secretary General Helder Pedro, in 2022 there were 1.5 million passenger cars over 20 years old on Portuguese roads.
According to ACAP, Portugal’s automotive sector generated revenue of €10.3 billion in 2023. The auto market grew 26% last year compared to 2022, but is still lower than 2019 (down 12.3 percent).
Last year’s balance sheet shows an increase in registrations in all categories, with an emphasis on alternative energy vehicles.
“In the passenger car category, where vehicle registrations grew 26.9% compared to 2022, vehicles using alternative energy sources instead of internal combustion engines had a weight of 51.9%.” In fact, according to ACAP, 18.2% of new passenger cars were electric. Tesla topped the brand table in the electrical market.
