Spain introduces visas for airport stopovers amid surge in asylum requests

Spain has started requiring visas from Kenyans only for stopovers at its airports and is considering extending the rule to other African countries due to an exponential increase in asylum requests in Madrid since August 2023.

A visa has been required for Kenyan citizens since last weekend, and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska acknowledged on Thursday that applying the same rule to Senegalese citizens was being studied.

“Obviously, within the framework of the EU policy on international protection,” he added, speaking to journalists in Brussels, after late last week having already acknowledged the possibility of requesting visas from citizens of several nationalities.
