Miguel Albuquerque announced this Friday his resignation as President of the Regional Government of Madeira. The successor will be announced on Monday.
“The goals of governance cannot be questioned; they can only be achieved within the framework of political stability,” he said.
On Wednesday, the president of the regional government of Madeira, suspected of corruption, economic involvement in business and malfeasance, as well as possible violation of community procurement rules, refused to resign.
However, “the situation has changed,” he said this Friday. Both Chega and PS Madeira promised to vote no confidence in the regional government. PAN, the party with which the PSD/CDS-PP maintains an agreement on parliamentary protection, expressed its readiness to rethink the government decision, but demanded the resignation of Miguel Albuquerque.
This Friday, the Social Democrat met with CDS-PP/Madeira leader and coalition partner in the executive Ruy Barreto to discuss the political situation in the archipelago.
