Paulo Portas this Monday accused Ana Gomes of “throwing mud at people.” The lawyer was testifying via video conference as a witness in the trial in which a former MEP is being tried for defaming Mário Ferreira through a “tweet” in which he referred to news of the businessman’s investment in an aviation company, saying he intended to “emulate OMNI Aviação e Tecnologia, a company from which 500 kilograms of drugs were confiscated on a plane flying from Brazil.
Paulo Portas believes that the tweet “is intended to destroy the reputation of a businessman who, until proven otherwise, should be respected.”
“Dr. Ana Gomes thinks she has a doctorate in law. She is wrong,” he said on the witness stand, noting that Mario Ferreira “is subject to obsessive and regular attacks by Ana Gomez.” “He always fights politically based on slandering others,” he added. He believes the tweet “suggests that someone is a drug dealer.” And he states that “to suggest this without any evidence is an act of defamation.”
The trial continues in the Bolhão court in Porto with the participation of prosecution witnesses. This is the fourth case involving Mario Ferreira and Ana Gomes, and in September the former MEP was ordered to pay a €2,800 fine and €8,000 compensation to businessman Mario Ferreira for also calling him a “fraudster” on Twitter.
