The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this Monday vetoed the parliamentary regulations on the choice of a neutral name and the measures that must be taken by schools to implement the law that establishes the self-determination of gender identity and expression and which provides, namely the installation of mixed sanitary facilities.
Regarding measures regarding gender identity, Marcelo justifies the preference for a diploma by saying that he believes, as he writes in a note on the president’s website, that “the decree does not sufficiently respect the role of parents, guardians, legal representatives and the associations created for them.” and does not clarify the situation depending on age.”
Regarding the possibility of changing the name, the veto was justified by the lack of guarantees of “a balance respecting the essential principle of human freedom.”
Only after early legislative elections on March 10 will these issues again become the subject of legislative regulation.
