An Algarve Football Association (AFA) referee was attacked by a player during a match in Portimao between Mexilloeira Grande FC and Ginacio de Tavira FC last Sunday.
The match referees were trying to resolve the conflict when one of them was kicked in the stomach by a player from the visiting team. The victim had to seek medical help at the hospital.
In its statement, the AFA Football Referees Union demands “an immediate investigation by the competent authorities and sports organizations” so that “the necessary measures can be taken against the aggressor and future incidents of this kind can be prevented.” The game took place as part of the Algarve Junior Football League.
