The Council of Ministers, in a statement on Tuesday, approved the declaration of national mourning on January 31 for the death of Jacques Delors.
Portugal and Spain have jointly decided to declare national mourning to coincide with a commemorative event to be organized by the European Commission in Brussels tomorrow.
“Jacques Delors, President of the European Commission from 1985 to 1994, was a central figure in the idealization and construction of Europe and played an important role in the accession of Portugal and Spain to the European Union in 1986. Both countries agreed on the importance of paying this just tribute as a sign of gratitude and recognition of the profound transformation that joining the European Union has had for generations of Portuguese and Spanish people,” the statement said.
